A year after rectal cancer surgery - hoping to connect with others that have been through the same

Hi I'm a year after rectal cancer surgery with no stoma bag , I'm wanting to connect with people that have been through the same and how life and bowel movements have changed for others ?

  • Hello Beaumont44

I'm sorry to hear that you went through surgery for rectal cancer last year. I hope that your recovery hasn't been too difficult and that you've been well supported by the health professionals involved in your care.

Hopefully, others who have been through surgery for rectal cancer will post to say hello soon, but in the meantime, we do have some information on our website about bowel changes after treatment that may be of interest to you. You're also most welcome to call our team of nurses to talk things through with them if that would help. I know they would be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi my husband had a robotic anterior resection 5 weeks ago. No stoma. He is finding it difficult at the moment to deal with the constant feeling of pressure and " needing to go" then not. Also has times of cluster pooing. Its beginning to get him down as he felt so well folliwing TNT prior to surgery. However having the tumour removed and given the all clear has helped. We saw the surgeon last week and he said these symptoms should start to settle around 3 months. Symptoms don't seem to be better or worse with any food types. He does however find it helps if he is distracted. We're hoping these symptoms will settle but are aware they csn take time. What has your experience been?

  • Mine took around 5 month to settle  but they do settle in time. It’s early days yet  but you will find things will improve

  • Thank you so much. Did you find anything helpful in managing these symptoms in the early days?

  • Yes indeed. Hearing my husband was free of cancer was so weird after such a long stressfuk time.It took us 24 hours to process the news. Im happy to hear you also have had that news. Did you find anything in particular which helped manage symptoms during the early months?
