Vaccines after Cancer

Hi

I was diagnosed with Acute Meyloid Leukemia this time last year.  Since then I have chemo and a stem cell transplant.

5 weeks ago today I had a DLI (T cell top up)

As your body is totally wiped of eveyrhing before you have a stem cell transplant I know that I will need to have all vaccines that I had as a child.

I am slightly worried and scared about having all these as to how my body will react to them.

I was just wondering if anyone has had this and their experience.

Thank you

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat, STenere and thank you for sharing a little about your story.

It sounds like you have been through a great deal over the past year with your treatment, transplant, and more recently the DLI. It is completely understandable to feel worried about the next step, especially when it involves having vaccinations again. Many people in a similar position feel a bit anxious beforehand, particularly as it can feel like starting over in some ways.

You might find it reassuring to have a conversation with your transplant team or specialist nurse about what to expect and how the vaccinations are usually scheduled. Having clear information about the plan and being able to ask questions can sometimes make it feel more manageable.

I hope some members who have also had a stem cell transplant will see your post and share their experiences with you.

If you would prefer to talk things through with someone with a medical background, our nurses are also available to listen and you can reach them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

Wishing you all the very best as you continue your recovery and do keep posting if it helps to talk.
