Ileostomy Reversal - 5 weeks post surgery and managing o.k, but what will life be like now? Is there any good news?

Good morning.  Am now five weeks post surgery.  Apparently it went very well, clear margins and no need for chemo or radiotherapy.  Managing the Stoma fairly well - one real disaster during a night after the stoma shrank and the bag hole ended up well too big. The stoma nurses had recommended a type of panty to use which contained the leakage reasonably well.  An emergency visit to the stoma nurses, now sorted.

I have read some horror stories of life after a reversal.  More than slightly worrying.

Is there any good news?

What am I really looking forward to.

Thank you.

  • Hello MrsBlueSky,

It's good news that they have said that the surgery went very well and it's fantastic news you had of clear margins and no need for chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Well done too for managing the stoma so well - little incidents like the one you mentioned do happen and it sounds like the stoma nurses sorted it all really well so hopefully all will be better from now on and it's good to know you can count on the expertise of the stoma nurses if you ever need it again.

It is normal to worry especially if you've read all those stories about life after a reversal but often we find the stories of all the worst case scenarios rather than the success stories so try not to expect things to go badly. I hope that things will only get better - you seem to be managing really well 5 weeks post surgery and hopefully you will hear from other members of our community who have had a successful ileostomy reversal and they will be able to tell you more about their experiences.

You're also most welcome to give our team of nurses a call if you'd like to chat with them about your concerns relating to the ileostomy reversal. They're available Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Wishing you the very best and that all goes smoothly for you now,
