Moving on after breast cancer treatment

Good evening

I've now finished my main treatment for breast cancer (HER2 stage 3)I'm still seeing my oncologist as I'm having a few issues with side effects from the hormone tablets.

I'm struggling with my emotions and mental health at the moment and scared about how to move on,  any advice would be greatly appreciated xx

  • Hi Vixta,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear that you are having problems with the side-effects of hormone therapy. Can I ask what treatment you're on? Nearly all of the hormone therapies have side-effects. Some of these are more marked with one medication than another. It is always difficult to move on after treatment. Most of us expect to be the same as we were pre-diagnosis after this, but unfortunately, most treatments leave a legacy of some kind or another. I had a number of side-effects with Tamoxifen and Letrozole, but I took them for 6½ years. If I had to, I'd do it all again, as so far, I've been fortunate enough to have survived 15 years since diagnosis.

Have you attended any of the Breast Cancer Now courses. I found the Moving Forward course particularly helpful. Don't expect things to change overnight. It took me a number of years before I could genuinely move on and it was a gradual progression. IT might also be helpful to talk to a Cancer Counsellor about how you feel. A number of Cancer Charities offer this service free of charge. There are Maggie's Centres dotted throughout the UK. If one of these is close to you I'd recommend a visit.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
