Tamoxifen side effects.

I have completed two years of treatment for breast cancer, surgery, chemo, radio, immunotherapy and now I have to take Tamoxifen every day for 10 years.

I am progesterone and estrogen receptive and was peri-menopausal prior to treatment. Therefore, I cannot stop taking it as I am high risk of it returning and apparently there are no other options for me.

I am suffering so badly with daily side effects, debilitating joint pain and exhaustion, all from the Tamoxifen.

Anyone else suffering with Tamoxifen side effects? Do you know of an alternative?

  • HI Happydan,

A very warm welcome to the forum. I am sorry to hear that you are suffering so much with Tamoxifen. You do not say what age you are and if you have reached the menopause since you started taking it. I am not a doctor, but I am aware that there are other medications if you are post-menopausal, yet, if taken before that, they can put you into an early menopause. I took Tamoxifen for my first bout of breast cancer. This was to reduce the joint pain that can be caused by Letrozole. Unfortunately, I got a number of side-effects and discovered a second cancer, less than a year after the first. I then took Letrozole for 6½ years. I don't think that any of the hormone therapies are without the possibility of causing side-effects, although some cause more specific problems than others. Some people are lucky enough not to have any problems with these drugs. I had severe problems with both, but I would happily take them again, if I had to, as I am now 15 years down the line, since my initial diagnosis.

How long have you been taking Tamoxifen for? Sometimes the effects settle down after you've been taking them for a while. You have had a lot of treatment, which will have left you exhausted too, so I wouldn't blame it all on Tamoxifen. Please discuss this with your care team. They have all your medical details and will know whether or not there are any suitable alternatives. Unfortunately, my experience was that I just had to grin and bear the side-effects.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamnine xx
