Work after treatment

I was diagnosed with breast cancer last February had 2 surgeries in April and June then radiotherapy the end of August. I am not back in work yet I work on a busy hospital ward. I am still very fatigued and I have odema in my right breast from the radiotherapy also skin burns both very painful. I was meant to go back to work this week but extended my sick note for another as I have had a course of antibiotics for an infection in my breast. I feel I am being forced back to work and I should be feeling better according to my manager. My sick pay has run out so financially I need to go back but physically I don't feel I will cope with the nature of my job. Any advise welcome

  • Hello Debbiedowner

I'm sorry to hear that you've been through treatment for breast cancer over the past year and that unfortunately, you're still dealing with some of the side effects of treatment. It sounds as if it's been a difficult time for you and perhaps made more so by the pressures that you're feeling about returning to work.

Before talking with your manager again I'd suggest getting in touch with the Macmillan work support service. Once someone has been diagnosed with cancer they are protected in law from unfair treatment. Under equality laws, employers should try to support you. This includes making reasonable adjustments to help you stay in or return to work when you are ready and able. Their service will be able to give you some advice and information that should hopefully help you, and your employer, move forward.

I do hope that the infection you have clears up soon and that you begin to feel better.

    Best wishes,
