How do you cope with taste and eating after treatment for base of tongue cancer? Been in remission since January this year

I had base of the tongue cancer a year ago. Some of tumour removed in op and the 6 weeks of chemo radiotherapy.  Been in remission since January 2024.  I have been left with no saliva, no taste (as in food tastes revolting) and very dry mouth.  I use Xylimelts at night which help me to get sleep.  How do you cope with eating?

  • Welcome to the forum, Perfector.
Thank you for sharing your story, and congratulations on being in remission since January, that’s a fantastic milestone.
Coping with eating after treatment for base of tongue cancer can be incredibly challenging, especially with changes to taste and saliva. Many others here will likely relate to your experience and I hope they’ll share their tips and advice on what’s worked for them.
In the meantime, you might find this page from our website on Taste Changes and Loss of Appetite helpful. It offers practical suggestions for managing changes in taste and maintaining your nutrition, even when food doesn’t taste the same.
You could also consider speaking to one of our nurses. They’re available on 0808 800 4040 (freephone), Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, and would be happy to talk things through with you.
I hope this helps, and please do keep us posted on how you get on.
    Best wishes,
