Anal Cancer /Stoma

Well it's been a while since my last post I was diagnosed T4 N1 Anal Cancer last year ,and had an emergency Stoma fitted so they could start my chemo/ radiotherapy .It was a leap into the unknown,I had 1 dose of chemo, then 5 and a half weeks radiotherapy, with weekends off,and chemo tablets to take when have the radiotherapy.I came through ok,and met friends along the way,its strange how for the treatment weeks it becomes part of a routine.,Ive had a 3 monthly MRI all looking good,my 6 monthly scan is 4 months late, but i chase it every two weeks,I see the consultant next week ,so ill  ask again.(i asked in March)said he would chase. It,I finished my treatment Aug 2023,and it's only the last few weeks I can honestly say I feel like ME again,I don't think I'll ever accept my stoma, but it saved my life and allowed my treatment to start,so maybe one day I will,I only had two days notice of needing the stoma ,so maybe that's why?,but anyone reading this about to start the treatment ,it has to be done to live, and yes week 3 it hit hard, but I came through it,I've since been abroad several times, and am moving on,good luck to anyone reading this,

  • Thanks so much for coming back to update us on your situation Dolittle.

It's great to hear how far you've come and that you're finally starting to feel like yourself again.

I know you have your appointment with the consultant next week, so I just wanted to wish you the best of luck. I'll have my fingers crossed they can finally get that scan sorted for you.

Also, having only 2 days to get your head around the fact you would need a stoma is really not enough time at all, so it's completely understandable, and natural, to have mixed feelings about this. I'm sure many of our members would agree and hopefully it won't be long until some of them stop by to offer their support and share their experiences and advice.

If you would like to discuss anything with one of our cancer nurses before your appointment, don't hesitate to give them a call on 0808 800 4040. Their helpline is open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they'll do all that they can to help.

We're thinking of you Dolittle and wishing you continued strength and success as you continue to move forward on this journey.

    Kind regards,

  • Hello Dolittle,

fully understand what you say about your stoma. Had mine for 18 months and it never healed so l was constantly sticking it on to bleeding raw skin. Managed to get it reversed and have spent the past 8 years with a belligerent bowel that presents daily challenges, so a case of damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Although currently l hardly have a love affair with my bowel, l hated my stoma with a vengeance, but in all of this am so grateful and fortunate to be here to write this reply. Like all survivors, we have a lot to be thankful for and crack on with living the best life---enjoy yours,
