Non-person

My appearance has changed drastically since having chemo and when we’re out people I know keep ignoring me and think my husband has another woman! If I say ‘hi it’s me’ they seem embarrassed and scuttle off. It’s very depressing and I hate the way I look now.

  • Hello GreySue

I'm so very sorry to hear how you're feeling at the moment. You've been through so much since your diagnosis and it's understandable that you may be struggling with the impact that the treatment has had on you physically, mentally, and emotionally.

I'm unsure what type of cancer you've had, or where you are in your treatment plan, but I'd really encourage you to talk with your clinical nurse specialist about how you're feeling. Some hospital teams have access to support services that can help you cope with changes to your appearance. If there is a Maggies centre in your area then it's also worth getting in touch with them for some support as well.

We do have some information on our website about coping with changes in your appearance that you may find helpful. It may be a way to help you start up a conversation with your husband or other family and friends around you regarding how you're feeling.

If you'd like to talk to one of our nurses for some advice and support you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm (excluding bank holidays).

You've taken an important first step in reaching out for help and support by posting in the community. I do hope that you're able to find some practical in-person support with family, friends or health professionals to help you feel more like you again.

    Best wishes,
