Reconstruction or tattoo

Hi, I had a left side mastectomy nine years ago and had considered reconstruction. I definitely didn’t want an implant as my skin is quite thin and I don’t like the idea of silicone in my body. I had considered the type where they take tissue from the stomach to make a new breast. The other option I am considering is to have a tattoo covering the area where my left breast once was. I don’t know if there is much point in having reconstructive surgery at the age of nearly 50. Has anyone else had a tattoo done following breast cancer?

  • Hello , I am 62 now and had bilateral mastectomies in 22 . I felt quite happy being flat but had myself put on waiting list for reconstruction anyway . I did decide to have it done but went for the chest expanders and the silicone as recovery is quicker . I have had this done and just waiting for the saline pouches to be swapped to silicone . I am happy with it and glad I did it . See how you feel ,tattoo sounds nice as well . I had no problem with prosthesis either . I think it’s a very personal thing . Good luck and keep well xx
