Is Sympathy pains a thing?

I am approx 2.5yrs cancer free, recovery from Throat cancer, had chemo/Radiotherapy, Operation to remove lymphnodes and also a PEG tube fitted etc...

My older sister is half way through similar treatment, although hers is in tounge, and already had op to replace 1/3rd of her tounge..

This week I have started to get sore in my gum area, as well as little sore throat, and my neck area where Operation was, had became tender to touch...I do have a check up with Oncoligist next week, but wonder if these feelings could be in sympathy for my sister, who is starting to get pain in mouth/throat etc?

  • Hello bobby1290

I'm sorry to hear that your sister is currently undergoing treatment for mouth cancer and I'm glad to hear that your treatment for throat cancer was so successful.

You pose a really interesting question about "sympathy pains". And I guess that many people will have their own views and answers to it.

Given that you've already been through a very similar journey to the one your sister is currently undergoing, I think that gives you a unique insight into what she is dealing with at the moment. And it may well evoke some memories of your own experiences and the side effects of treatment that you dealt with. The mind is a wonderfully complicated thing and undoubtedly some of what we think and feel can result in physical symptoms and experiences.

I think the important thing now is to get your symptoms checked at your oncology appointment next week. Hopefully they will be able to reassure you that all is well and you can concentrate on your own well-being and supporting your sister.

I do hope that your appointment goes well and that your sister's treatment progresses to a successful outcome.

    Best wishes to you both,
