Has anyone else had issues with their bladder after having pelvic radiotherapy for vulva cancer?

Hi

I had 25 sessions of pelvic radiotherapy for vulva cancer which finished at the end of August last year. Recently I've noticed that when I go to the toilet my bladder is really 'sluggish' and it takes a while to empty. Has anyone else experienced this?

  • Hello haylzz,

I hope that you will meet other members of our community who have experienced these difficulties emptying their bladder following pelvic radiotherapy for vulval cancer and that they will share their experiences with you. Our page on radiotherapy for vulval cancer contains useful information on 'radiotherapy side effects' and it mentions that radiotherapy to the vulval area may cause problems with your bowel or bladder including for example "feeling like you need to empty your bladder soon after going to the toilet". Do talk to your doctor or nurse about these issues especially as you finished treatment a while ago now. They will be able to tell you whether this is a long term side effect of your radiotherapy treatment and will have some helpful suggestions to help you deal with these issues.

If you would like to talk to one of our cancer nurses about this, feel free to give them a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I hope that things improve for you soon.

    Best wishes,
