Moving on

Am 9 weeks post treatment for tongue cancer, I had 6 weeks of radiotherapy 5 days a week and 2 Chemotherapy.  I am feeling much better than I did, can drink swollow and eat soft foods but not solids yet.

I have returned to work part time and everyone says how well I look. I still get pain but not as bad as it was. The problem is I can still feel the tumor on my tongue but it is smooth now. When I get slight pain I start to think the cancer has not gone and I start panicking. I haven't said anything to anyone as I don't want anyone to think I am being negative. Is this normal to feel like this.

  • Hello Lynf,

It sounds like you're doing really well in your recovery post tongue cancer treatment. I am pleased to hear you are feeling better and that you can eat soft foods now. Well done for managing to return to work part time and it's lovely that your colleagues are commenting on how well you look. Things seem to be going in the right direction with your pain lessening.

It's completely understandable that you start panicking when you get the slightest pain and you fear that it is linked to the cancer - talking to your medical team about this perhaps at your next appointment will help alleviate those fears as I am sure they will be able to explain to you what these pains might be and reassure you that everything is on track and your recovery is going well. It can be difficult to move on after going through cancer treatment and the recovery can be a long process especially when it comes to diet and eating - it can take a while and it's definitely not always easy.

Other members of our forum will have been in a similar place and undergone tongue cancer treatment and I hope that you will hear from their experiences.
