Pausing BC treatment to have a Baby

Hi all,

Wondered whether anyone has paused their hormone therapy after breast cancer to have a baby, I'm on Anastrole and prostap injections. Thanks

  • Thanks for the post,  I'm seeking information for the same thing!

I didn't feel finished making my family when I got diagnosed in June. I'm on gorselin injection during chemonto *** my ovaries down to protect my fertility but it also stops me producing oestrogen - que early menopause - lovely!

My oncologist says after surgery they cam give me a risk calculation of reoccurrence and if low I could take a break from the hormone therapy.

I'm not sure if we'd trybfor another child after all this but I'm keen to explore the information around this and of course other ladies experiences

  • Hi I was diagnosed in October with invasive Ductal Carcicoma grade 3, her2- lymph node clear oestrogen Fed. I have since had A lumpectomy, 6x FEC-t and 8 radiotherapy's I'm now in Anastrole and prostap injections. I'm 38! When I was told about my Cancer I was given the option to harvest my eggs but at that time they had a cancellation for my op only 7 days later so I decided not too. I had an Oncotype test which was a 10,

I see my consultant soon, I'm going to ask her. I'm also now in an early Menapause, struggling with the flushes and what comes with it

thanks for your reply. Love Sarah

  • Hi Sarah

Our diagnosis and treatment journey sound very similar,  sounds like you're out the other side of all the major treatment stages and on the hormone blocker pathways.

Sounds a bit strange but I think I can cope with the chemo, surgery and radiotherapy as they're done and finished with , but the long term hormone blockers and menopause I'm struggling to get my head around.

I started gorserlin injections with my chemo in July- to put my ovaries to sleep and reduced oestrogen production. I'm meant to carry on with that for 5 years but also another one is it tamoxifen (spelt wrong!) For 10 years. .I've been having awful headaches and now hot sweats at night mainly but also started in the day. Thinking I might get away with not putting the heating on so much this winter!!

My oncologist said we could discuss discontinuing goserelin after chemo to see where I am but would need to start tamoxifen after surgery.

I am very lucky I have 2 little boys but didn't feel I'd finished my family and am struggling to accept that's the end of my baby's.

I'd be interested to hear what your oncologist recommends, are you keen to pause your hormone treatment?

    Lots of love

  • Hi Gemma,

Im on Anastrole instead of Tamoxifen ( think they do the same thing though) also prostap which I assume is the same as your injections but different name.

The prostap is causing my joints to ache, plus I have to have a bone strength drip every 6 months. I had my first at the end of July, It was like I had the flu, my nurse said that was normal.,  the hot flushes are awful, I cannot sleep at night, my nurse said if they continue I might have prostap once a month instead of 3 monthly.

Before I was diagnosed in October my husband and I through caution to the wind, because I wanted a baby. My dad died sadly only 5 days after I was told about me from a brain tumour. I have two sons 11 and 14 I kept my diagnosis a secret from them, I used the cold cap and managed to hide my chemo side effects, I used the Menapause as an excuse which was sort of true. Anyway I just feel I'm not finished with my family and am hugely gutted that it's been taken away from me.
i have been referred for counselling which I will take up, I'm frightened for the future, I'm petrified if it returns, my first mammogram is November I'm already worried about it.

thanks so much for reaching out. Love Sarah

  • Hi just saw on your reply to Lara that your using the cold cap, I did it. I had a bald patch on my crown and it also went thin! Just wanted to say though it started to grow back before my last Docetaxil, and grew back like my normal hair really fast and thick. If you can do it don't give up, I managed to keep enough to look like I didn't have Cancer, my last two cold caps were hard, I used a travel pillow around my neck and that really helped. Xxx
