Private Healthcare rollover with a new job?

Hi,

Wondering if anyone else has beein in a simular situation. My Wife is Stage 4 Breast cancer (;ast 18 months) and is successfully in remission with her chemo and induced menopause treatments that appear to be working. Her current employer has private medical insurance (PMI) who have been brilliant with her treatment package.

But she is thinking of leaving but we can't find any information regarding if her PMI can/can't transfer over to a new job (assuming they also have PMI as part of the package).

She has tried calling her current provider who advised she could move to a personal healthcare but can't quote until a month before her existing one ends meaning she has to resign first before she knows how much it might cost (crazy!).

We've both read that pretty much all PMI's won't insure you for existing medical conditions including cancer.

So right now she feels she is stuck in a job, that she doesn't want to do and can't see any light at the end of the tunnel. All because of cancer.

Has anyone else experienced this or can advise of a possible solution? Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

  • Hi Andi

PMI works pretty much the same as all other types of insurance. They usually won't cover pre-existing conditions if you are new but providing you maintain continuity of cover when leaving one policy and moving to another then they will cover you under the same terms. That of course is much easier to organise if you stick with the same provider. and you should simply be able to speak to them and get continuous cover if you transfer from a company policy to a private policy.

It gets more tricky if the new employer doesn't use the same provider and therefore they may provide PMI which doesn't include the same level of cover. If she is going to start looking for a job then she doesn't need  to do anything untill she leaves her existing job, but she could always take out a personal policy with the same company to tide her over and then if her new employer dosn't offer the same PMI package you might end up having to keep the personal policy. I have worked in PMI and also transferred to a different provider myself whilst going through cancer treatment and had no problems at all but it really does depend on the providers concerned. Don't let that put her off looking around. You could always get in touch with the current provider as a potential new customer just to find out what the cost would be or speak to a broker and get them to do all the research for you. I hope it works out and good luck with the job hunting
