State Pension

My friend died one day after his 66th birthday so would have started to receive his state pension. It doesn’t appear there isn’t anything in place to account for a situation like this. As far as we can see his wife will probably get Bereavement benefit, but what happens to the money he was not able to receive in state pension? Is that it - it goes back in the pot?

  • Hi there, she should get hold of hmrc and enquire about this as my understanding is that you receive a portion of your husband's pension if he dies.  Only a qualified person involved in this will have the current answer as it is relevant to his situation at the time of his death.  Hope this helps a little bit.  Carol

  • Thank you I had hoped that might be the case. Would seem very unfair not to get something when he only lived long enough to qualify but not to benefit. Will pass on for her to investigate further Trish
