Life Insurance questions/updating critical illness policies

Hello, my wife found a lump in her breast and went to the GP and has been refered to a phone consultation on the 1st December, due to covid the process is different I believe.

I'm hoping for the best but soo we wouldn't struggle as much financially if it was bad news I want to increase our critical illness cover and life insurance premium. At what stage so I have to update them?. I'm wondering if I can get the policy changed to a higher amount without disclosing why. On the other hand I don't want a policy not to pay out if we needed it if they thought we were trying to hide something from them.

thank you

James

  • Hello fishermenjc,

It's difficult to know what is possible as your wife hasn't had a cancer diagnosis. Here are some organisations that might be able to address your concerns better.

I'm wishing her all the best for the appointment. There are also some tips here that can help her get the best out of it.

  • Hi James

ive only just joined this site, but saw your comment and although it's probably too late, thought I'd answer anyway. I used to work for an insurance company, and when someone wanted to upgrade their cover, we would ask the exact same questions, as we did when the cover was first taken. Have you had any signs or symptoms.. so, in your case, if you told a fib and said no, and they agreed to upgrade your cover and you paid extra, when the time comes to make a claim, there's a massive chance they'd write to the GP and ask for copies of the notes. If the notes read 'patient said they'd been having symptoms for xx weeks' and that made it prior to you upgrading the cover, they would consider it fraud, they wouldn't pay out on the additional cover and there's even a chance they could cancel the cover and not pay out anything (I've never known an insurance company to actually go that far, but their terms and conditions usual say they have that right)

  • Hello all.  This is a topic that makes my blood boil. We were with a well known life insurance company, Sorry if this is against forum rules.  L&G,  my wife died just over 6 months ago from bowel cancer, it was only discovered when an MRI scan picked it up. from the diagnosis she died after 6 weeks.

Now this should have been a formality, or so I thought. but turned out to be 4 months down the line before her insurance paid out.. What was annoying is recieving a letter from the company saying it wanted to check that when the wife signed the documents, cancer was not present when we signed. it was three years further down the line when she had a large polyp removed which had cancer cells.. a few weeks later another letter arrived. and basically said it was looking into her hospital notes to see if she had covid19 as that would affect the amount we would recieve. she was tested at the hospital, and agian at the hospice before arriving, and leaving to come home. if it wasn't hard enough coping with the wife's death and arranging her funeral, I was having to cope with this unsympathetic  company. it was like a living nightmare and I was begining to wonder if there would ever be an end to it. So anyone who is struggling with life insurance companies, is keep your head stay calm, and things will work its self out.

As for fishermenjc,  As it has been said by the moderator. what the outcome is with the lump your wife has found, and I do hope it's not the worst outcome. But If you increase your critical illness. I can only guess they would be told about your wife, if so , critical illness cover would come at a premium, or may even be denied.  What I have wrote and had to go through is just a small portion there were more thing going on such as not recieving documents, and having to get all signed by the right people. they will send you letters with the kind of wording  a mensa brain would find hard to work out. unlike myself, I need things put in laymans terms and not bamboozled by words I couldn't even pronounce.

I have read lucylou's comments. and by the way she has discribed if you tell a fib. there always suspicous and will avoid any payout  if they can. sorry lucylou, I wasn't having a go at you, but insurance life cover companies. No offence meant
