Critical illness insurance claim

Has anyone had any success with a critical illness claim where the patient has had a cancer diagnosis but is also a heavy drinker? My husband has been diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer, stage 4 but is also a heavy drinker. We have received a copy of the GP report for the insurance claim and it contains letters and info relating to his drinking problem as well as his cancer. This inclusion has surprised me. My husband has written off the claim now, saying we have no chance of any payout. Is this true?

  • Hello Buddyk,

studies have shown an increased risk of developing a neuroendocrine cancer from higher alcohol comsumption,so presumably as a material fact your doctor disclosed this in their report. It should come as no surprise that your insurer would seek to use this fact to reduce any settlement,if not dismiss it completely. It can only be argued that it could have been a contributary factor and proven as the only cause, for instance genetics may have played a part.It will also depend on the policies definitions,if that states exclusions from self inflicted actions.

It would be right to say that the history of heavy drinking will not have helped any claim, but further enquiries would be in order to see if it has excluded it,
