work & cancer

I was diagnosed with a cancerous tumour on my ovary 2 weeks ago and i am due to start radiotherapy next week.

i am in full time education and i work part time, my radiotherapy fractions and appointments are all in the mornings so i miss a bit of school but none of them are during my work hours.

i work in morrisons cafe at the weekends, when i found out i had cancer i had work a few hours later so i think my boss could see something was up. So i told my line manager about my cancer diagnosis and that im having radiotherapy. He's said that he has to tell the store manager of my circumstances and find out if they have to do anything because of my radiotherapy, (i assume he means risk assesments)

The thing is, i haven't told my colleagues or any else at work about my cancer and i plan to keep it that way (its my way of coping, work is my place to just feel normal and the same as everyone else) . If my cancer doesn't affect me at work and im not having time off is it neccessary for my work to be so involved in my cancer (eg asking for doctors notes etc), i guess my question is, do i have to tell work about cancer & radiotherapy if it doesnt affect me at work, and what rights do they have asking me for evidence if cancer doesnt affect me at work (do i need a risk assessment)?

I have to say my manager has been so supportive and understanding of it and i really appreciate it, its just i have control of the coversations so i don't have to talk about stuff that upsets me. I hate talking about it and work has been my escape from everyting and kept me sane! Also whats your advice on telling colleauges, i just dont want to be treated differently!

  • Hi annahops17,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to read about what you're going through at the moment, and I'm glad you found this forum for support.

I can understand that your work situation is a little tricky. In terms of rights, you would probably be better off speaking to an organisation like Macmillan who can advise on this.

It sounds like you have a good relationship with your manager, so perhaps you can also discuss your thoughts with them - and especially that work is important to you and that you'd like to be able to carry on as normal there. I'm sure they will understand.

Similarly, the decision to tell colleagues or not should be up to you. So if you feel it would affect how they treat you, it would be fine to not mention it I'm sure. But equally if you'd like to keep them in the loop, hopefully they would be supportive to you.

I hope this helps a little and I hope you're able to find out more soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
