Hi my mum has recently come home after 2 weeks of being in hospital, she has been having radiation treatment for cancer of her neck.  Was making enquiries on behalf of my dad as there seems to be little help now she has returned home. There is a district nurse that comes but only seems to tend to her dressing on her neck.  She doesn't bathe mum nor give medication and seems to be all on my dad to care for mum.  Is there anyone we can get in touch with that can provide a little help should dad need it thanks

    Hello, I know what your Dad is going through as I have dealt with the after care of my husband and were both in our seventies.  I'm not sure who can help but I employed a cleaner and this gave me more time to help and not be worn out.  Are they receiving the DLA money to help with these matters, contact the McMillan nurses in Mum's case and check.  It seems once treatment is completed you are left to cope with the aftermath.  Ask the district nurse for some advice or if Dad is really struggling see if you can get some social care put in place, even a fifteen minute visit can help to wash and help her out of bed.  I hope this helps you a little bit.  Good luck,  Carol

    Thank you carol, I just cant believe how little support there is, my parents are in their 70's I just thought that once treatment is over help would be provided even if it was for a month... but I'll take on board what you mentioned just upsets me that you are kinda left to get on with it when it's an emotional time x

    It is emotional but us oldies are made of stern stuff!  My girls have been the same worried that we are left to it but they're hundreds of miles away so we don't say much.  I have written a blog each day throughout his cancer treatment and this is one of the subjects I have covered during that time.  Be pro active and you should get it sorted out.  If your parents agree to you contacting people on their behalf they can write a letter confirming you're allowed to speak for them, lodge it with the GP and also with the McMillan nurses and it will make life easier for you all.  Carol

    Bless I'm lucky to be 45 mins away and happy to do anything they need me too but with work I can only call once or 2 times a week to see them. I'm seeing dad on wed so will have a chat with him and see if he wants me to do something thanx you so much x
