Side effects of Letrozole

Hi,

I am struggling since starting on Letrozole. My moods have become dark and the change in my state of mind is frightening. I have always been a happy, positive person, and now I feel rock bottom, straight lining.

Have any other ladies experienced depression as a side effect of taking this drug? I am considering stopping    The medication.

please can anyone give me hope that the side effects will subside.

thank you.

    Hi Nikki,

I took Letrozole for 6 years - stopped taking it in July 2017. I also took Tamoxifen for a year before starting on Letrozole. This was because I developed a second cancer within the year. Depression is something that affects most cancer patients. It sounds as if you may need a mild anti-depressive. I was very reluctant to do this at first, but it has made all the difference in the world.

There are other tips that people have found helpful. These include taking your tablets at night instead of in the morning. Also, using the original patented version of Letrozole, rather than the generic brands has helped many. If these suggestions don't work for you have a word with your breast care team, as there are a number of alternatives that might not cause you as many side-effects. Whatever you do, don't stop taking the Letrozole until you have discussed this with your care team.

Pease let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Dear Jolamine

Thank you so much for your response. I am really sorry to learn that a second cancer came back within a year . That must have been devastating for you and your family.

I start the radiotherapy this week and will try to see my oncologist about the side effects that I am experiencing. Thank you for suggesting an antidepressant. Because I have had difficulty in sleeping, I have been taking sleeping tablets and I am  concerned about becoming addicted to so many drugs.

Did you have radiotherapy and if so how did you find it? Worrying about it is probably worst than just getting on and getting it over with so that I can reclaim my life and put  this behind me.

i must sound so ungrateful for the treatment that I am receiving. I’m pleased that I can look forward to seeing the spring daffodils and tulips that are beginning to pop their heads through the soil. And I know that by going through all this I can hope for lots of happy memories to be made in the years ahead.

I hope that you are fully recovered now Jolamine.

Good luck and thank you for your kindness in giving me your good advice. I’m sending you a hug,

  • Dear Jolamine

I have been thinking of you today. Do you have any news on your results?

All my best wishes. Please let me know how you are.xxx

    Hi Nikki,

How did your first radiotherapy session go?

My results are still not back, so I am still playing the waiting game. I shall let you know the outcome as soon as I hear.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine

it must be excruciating for you having to wait so long for your results. I often think that no news is good news though and if the scan was cause for concern, the hospital would have responded more swiftly. Let’s hope and pray that you soon get a happy result.

The radiotherapy sessions were ok. 3 down and 12 to go. I’m looking forward to February when I can reclaim my life and not have hospital visits every day. Talking to other ladies waiting for their treatment, I realise that I am so lucky that I didn’t have chemo. So many ladies are wearing turbans and scarves on their heads that I feel I have got off lightly.

i hope that you have some nice plans for the weekend to keep your spirits up Jolamine. I will be thinking of you.

    Best wishes

    Hi Nikki,

I am glad to hear that your first radiotherapy sessions went well. It's hard to believe, but that's you more than ¼ of the way through already. When you start talking to others, you realise that there are many others who are worse off and, begin to feel how blessed you are, when you have got off so lightly. Here's hoping that this continues to be the case.

It's not much fun waiting for results, but I'll just have to be patient.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

    Hi Nikki,

You certainly are up early. I hope that your radiotherapy is still going well. It's tough going for treatment every day.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Jolamine

it was a shock to get up,in the dark and to scrape ice off the car. Although my appointment was very early, the poor radiographer had to start their shift at 7am. So early. I feel very sorry for them. It’s crap being in the room having radiotherapy but at least we have only been cooped up for 15 minutes before we can escape into daylight. When they are busy, the radiotherapy team work until 7pm and tha5 must be  exhausting.

I am being treated in Kent. In What part of the country do you live Jolamine?

    Hi Nikki,

It's a long day for the radiographer. It's no wonder that they get stressed working for 12 hours a day in what must be a stressful job, even if working shorter hours. I am at the opposite end of the country from you.

You will notice that Ben has removed the name of your hospital, as we are not allowed to mention the name of any hospital in line with forum terms and conditions.

Fifteen minutes doesn't seem too long, but long enough for the treatment you're having. It's more having to attend every day that is hard. How far do you have to travel to the hospital?

    Thinking of you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine

Oops ! I wasn’t aware that I shouldn’t have mentioned the name of the hospital. They  do work so hard.

    Night night. Catch up soon.
