Anyone else on chemo and struggling to maintain Hb levels

Hi all

Hope you're having a nice holiday season.

Just wondered if anyone else is struggling with Hb levels and is symptomatically anemic. I have been anemic at 99 since February and through a large portion of chemo managed to maintain a level of atleast 99. But in the last 5 weeks my body just can't seem to keep the level up. It should be 120 minimum but as I say I haven't been that since Feb. However now my levels plummet down to 70s.

I have developed really bad tachycardia when even having to move, breathlessness and dizziness. The doctors say this is because I'm anemic.

I've now had three blood transfusions, one each time I get really low, and this picks me up a lot. The symptoms really reduce for about 4 days before I start feeling bad again. The transfusions also don't seem to pick me up past 99 but noone seems worried about this despite the fact it still means I'm anemic.

I am assuming I'll just have to be on transfusions until the end of chemo now atleast. Just wondered if anyone else has had any experience and if they had to continue transfusions after their chemotherapy has ended? Mines due to finish mid January but now I'm wondering if I'll need transfusions after this is my body can't seem to make enough Hb.

Thanks in advance for reading and any replies

All the best

Rose

  • Hello Rose,

Thank you for sharing your experience and I am sorry to hear you have needed all these blood transfusions and have suffered from anemia. The tachycardia, breathlessness and dizziness you describe must be rather debilitating and I hope they haven't affected you too much during this festive season. I hope that you will manage to speak to others here who have been in a similar situation and have had this kind of experience with transfusions. I think the best thing to do given your very specific circumstances would be to ask your medical team who will be best placed to advise you on how long they think you might need these transfusions for and whether they think these will still be required after your chemotherapy treatment has ended.

Our nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm (but closed on 1st January) if you wanted to talk things through with them.

I hope you are feeling ok right now and that your treatment goes well. Let us know how things go for you. We are all here for you!

    Best wishes,
