Time off work following devastating news

To keep this brief, my beautiful mum has been diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme, 10 days ago. Naturally we are all devastated, but tying to stay positive.  My query is...on the day she was admitted to hospital I got 1 day compassionate leave from my employer. I have then taken rest of week as sick as cant function, eat nor sleep and constantly in floods of tears. I'm meant to go back to work tomorrow but I've found out today she is to be taken to see neuro consultant at specialist unit then. Understandably I want to accompany and support her.

My employer is making me have a sickness review end of the week to which I've said I'll attend ( before I knew of this plan)...any ways around this? I cant use holiday as we are short staffed already.

Anyone been in a similar situation?

Thanks in advance xx

  • Hi there, this is so difficult for you but unfortunately emoyers are following their guidelines, for example when my Mum died I was allowed two days off work, no argument about this, it was  the allocated time.  See if someone else can go with Mum and sit in with her, go to your review and see where you stand.  I'm sure there will be someone on this forum who Will know more about employment law, so keep checking.  Thinking of you during your turmoil.  Carol x

  • Hello Julouise, i'm sorry to hear about your mum's diagnosis

There are people you can talk to for advice, I suggest you check out Macmillan's website on work related issues and perhaps give their helpline a ring. They do have specialist advisers who will be able to give you more information about employees rights

I hope all goes well at your review and with your mum's appointment

    Best wishes
