Dental clearance before breast cancer treatment

hi I've been asked by oncologist to have a dental check before radiation and hormone blockers are given I'm a bit confused as why as I told him my teeth are in excellent condition and my last check up was in August and everything was fine I'm wondering if the treatment can rot your teeth or the hormone blockers affect the bone in the jaw ?

  • Hi

I have the same question, I've been told that I will need to have bisphosphonates and will need a dental check before I have it every 6 months. I think one of the risks is it can impact the bone in your jaw and it can also impact how you heal if you were to have a tooth extracted. I need to do some more digging to understand this in more detail. Will be interested to hear others stories.

  • hi woollylamb I just rang the dentist for appointment the receptionist was helpful when I told her my situation she said that the Bisphosphonates can cause Osteonecrosis in the jawbone if you've anything underlying like a bad tooth or something that it's best to get it treated now before treatment starts so many things to think about isn't there ! I had quite a bit of dental work done early this year but I'm going next Thursday to get clearance from the dentist hope you get on ok I'm at hospital on 9th December for CT scan and radiation planning .
