Trying to get travel insurance but really expensive!

Hello, I have just joined this forum so I'm new to all this.   I was diagnosed with recurrent breast cancer with multiple metastases in the bones back in February.  I am stable on hormone medication at the moment.

I wonder if anyone can give me some good advice.  I have permission to fly and this is the first opportunity so i am trying to get travel insurance for a week in Spain.  I was astounded to receive quotes over £700!  I have rang lots of the companies on the list from cancer research but most of them won't even cover me at all.  I have been told it's incurable but it is being managed and I feel absolutely fine.  Maybe bad timing for insurance companies with Thomas Cook going into administration? Is this the same for everyone?  I have even toyed with the idea of just taking a chance and not declaring my medical condition? Has anyone got any recommendations please as I want to enjoy my life while I feel fit.  Thanks

  • I am sure Macmillan specialise in helping with suggestions for this .. try their helpline  ... so sorry to hear of your struggles x

  • Hi, I also have secondary Breast cancer and had the same problem as yourself, makes you feel like a leper! Anyway was recommended an insurance company called WorldFirst, they insured me for £35 for a week in Turkey last year, This year I paid £79 for annual cover as I was going away at least twice (Greece and Majorca)   The policy covers everthing including any medical problems related to the cancer. They are excellent and are extremely knowledgeable about different cancers and the treatments involved. You can do it online or give them a call. You might want to google their phone number, I haven't put the phone number on here because I'm not sure it's allowed. Anyway hope this helps, enjoy your holiday. Regards Lynn

  • Thank you for your reply I will ask them x

  • Thanks Lynn, I have been using World First for years they are great! But since my cancer has recurred this year they are not wiling to insure. I suppose it depends on the answers you give to the questions.  I will keep trying as may have more luck next year.  It is good to hear that they are insuring others so maybe might insure me too once I am more months into my treatment.  Thanks xx

  • Hello

    You could try insurancewith.com

My nan used them after her esophagus cancer and found them to be very reasonable given the circumstances.

It's absolutely abysmal that companies try to charge so much to people who have gone through such rough times.

    Hope you find something

    All the best

    Rose

  • Hi, sorry to hear they won't insure you, I'm really surprised, I have secondary cancer in my liver and bones, I have treatment(targeted therapy) every 3 weeks. I answered all the questions honestly and gave them all the the info they asked for, makes no sense. Good luck with your search for reasonably priced insurance, hope you get your much needed holiday. Regards Lynn

  • Thank you Rose,  I will give them a try. x

  • Hi Lynn

I think I may have answered a question incorrectly on one of World First's questions  I have perserved since seeing your reply and have spoken to them about it and they have been most helpful.  I need to check out a couple of the questions with my consultant to be 100% certain I have the correct information.  But I am extremely grateful to you for telling me of you success with getting insurance as I am now feeling more hopeful that I will get insured.  I think we both have a very similar diagnosis and treatment.  Thanks for all your help.  All the best to you.

    Regards Sue

  • Hi

I had the same issue with my travel insurance. They said they would cover me everything else but not my cancer. I called for some quotes and they came in at £1,000 for 8 days cover. So off we went to the USA without my cancer being covered.

Im going to try the WorldFirst company next time and see if it's a reasonable quote. I know it's all about risk and probability but I decided that I wasn't going to stop my illness stopping me from going abroad.

Get some specialist quotes and go from there.

  • lynnHi Sue

Your very welcome, I'm so pleased, good for you, I hope you get it resolved positively soon. I started off doing it online but some of the questions didn't have a straightforward yes or no answer in my case so I decided to call them to discuss it, I didn't want to risk them not paying out if I needed to claim.  Anyway good luck!

    Regards

    Lynn
