Too late for power of attorney

Hi

My Widowed mother has very aggressive cancer and has been given weeks to live. She has been moved to an end of life care home. She is unable to make decisions due to speech impairment or she is unable to hold a full conversation which may be as a result of high levels of pain relief. I need to clear out her flat and close down utility bills etc but they won’t talk to me. It’s too late to get PoA.   What do I do?

  • Hi there ..

You could try McMillan,  they have a finance adviser there ... ask to speak to them .. if you go on their home page the numbers on there ..

    Good luck ... Chrissie...

  • Can she make her wishes clear by writing?  This would do for a LPA as long as she can sign it.   Are there times when she is more able to speak than others?  If you cannot get this done you would have to apply for deputyship through the court of protection.  This can be expensive.  Can the home arrange for a Mental Capacity Act assessment with regard to the specific question of whether or not she is happy for you to close the flat and pay the bills.

    Good luck.

  • Mum is being moved to a care home that is already funded as it’s end of life care.   I need support with closing bills and rented flat. Or do I need to wait until she passes.   Just seems a waste to be paying for rent and utilities bills if she will never be returning home.   She has been given a few weeks to live so perhaps I just need to wait.?
