housing benefit in uk

hi all any advice welcome. My mum currently lives in france and owns her proprty outright in france. She has lung cancer and is currently receiving treatment in france for this. However, she has deteriorated now and requires family support/care to make it through the day.

Issue is she is unable to sell her property in france possibly due to brexit and needs to come back to the uk to be with her family. As far as i know she receives pension in france but cant afford to rent here in the uk until her property is sold in france.

To receive housing benefit she cant have a property in france.

Does anyone know if she can get help with accomodatuion costs in the interim through housing benefit or is she stuck until the property is sold upon which she can rent a place.

Family can look after her in their homes in the short term but she does want a sense of independence and dignity at this time?

Any advice welcome

  • Hello nd1972,

What an emotionally and financially stressful situation your mum is going through at the moment and I do hope she manages to sell her house in France so that she can come and be with her family at a time when she needs it the most.

Given your mum's specific circumstances, I would suggest you get in touch with Macmillan as they have a wealth of information on benefits and financial support and there is also a number you can ring to contact them and ask them about these financial issues. You can find out more about this here

Best wishes to you and your mum. I do hope you get this situation sorted soon so that you can get this financial burden off your shoulders and I hope your mum can be reunited with her loved ones soon.

    Best wishes,

    Lucie, Cancer Chat
