Prostate cancer and travel insurance

Phew! After my dear husband has been onto insurance companies to see if its possible to get insurance to go on holiday to florida. Paul was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer days before xmas last year. He is just 2 weeks away from finishing hes 1st lot of chemo. His coped really well with almost no side affects. Thinking we might take a holiday to our favourite destination.on listening to the guy on other end of phone.it seems its not impossible but comes at a huge expence. Its not the money. But suddenly like every so often the whole situation overwhelms me. Hits me like a wave.life will never be the same again.... sorry just needed to vent somewhere.

  • Hi alison ...

I had the same problem ... I had mastectomy last July. . No chemo or radiotherapy ... so I wanted xmas in Florida ... insurance was a nightmare .. no one I knew would put cancer and Florida together ... even though I was on no treatment ... so I wanted to go so much ... they would cover me just for accidents ( non cancer related) and the things if they had no cancer in ...

I had a wonderfull time and so glad I took the chance but I'm not advising anyone to do what I did ... it is frustrating and I wish there was somewhere that would help after cancer ... I've booked Florida again for this xmas ... but got everything crossed and we go really carefull ... no skydiving for me lol ...

There are other holidays in Europe where there's more cover ... maybe better to go somewhere there for this year for you both ... just try look on positive side ... he's come so far on this journey we find our selfs on ... and there's a lot of choice nearer home... and you could think of Florida another time ... when his energy levels are up ..  Chrissie x

  • Hello Simplyalison,

After all you've been through, you definitely deserve a holiday and Florida does sound like an exciting destination. I thought I'd share with you this link to our information page on travel insurance. This is a topic that frequently comes up in our forum in our Practical Matters topic area. If you do a little search by typing 'travel insurance' in the forum search engine, you will be able to see all past threads on the subject and there may be some helpful suggestions in there.

    I hope this helps!

  • If someone needs this information, there are different types of insurance, some of them cover only emergencies. And some insurance policies are more extensive and cover more cases. You need to talk to an insurance specialist.
