Asbestos in my garage

We moved into a house last September. This house was built in 1976. Whilst we were planning to build an extension, we discovered that the garage ceiling is boarded using Asbestos. Its been there, I suspect, from the time this house was built. We got it checked with engineers from 2 different companies and they have confirmed it is asbestos. My question is , what is the risk for my family if it is left untouched?

  • Hi,

The consensus seems to be that it will pose no risk as long as you don't drill, sand, demolish or otherwise disturb it.

If you click on the Search Forum link in the blue banner towards the top of this page and type in asbestos, you should find some useful information. Here's just one example www.cancerresearchuk.org/.../asbesto...

I've seen a few similar questions on here and the advice always seems to be that short term, low level, exposure to asbestos is highly unlikely to cause problems.

Asbestos was in common use until the 1980s when it was banned in the UK (amazingly it still isn't banned in the USA) and the majority of people who were affected by it were exposed to it for long periods - months or years - rather than just the once.

Try not to worry too much about this.

    Best wishes

    Dave

  • Hi there ... can understand how worried you must feel ... I'm 63 and I remember when I was at school in science class we all used asbestos slab under our Brunson burners ...  we were always seeing if it would burn And my dad had it in his shed ... so although it's harmful , don't think it's instant ... maybe idea to ask your council office as they maybe able to remove it safely ...

good idea of Davies to go on line to for advice ... good luck Chrisie X
