HPV, abnormal Pap tests and what do I tell my partner

I have just had my PAP rest back and it says I have Low-grade dyskaryosis and HPV positive. I have been with my current partner for just under 12 mths and only had unprotected sex twice. I'm so upset that I might have given him HPV without knowing as I've only just found out. I'm so scared to tell him and can't stop crying. I'm. Wing sent for a colposcopy in a weeks tine.

What should I do.

  • hi there i know it can be hard but honesty is the best option i think in cases like this & for what i hear hpv is treatable so the sooner he knows the better

  • HPV is a tricky one, you might just as easily have contracted it from him. I'm no expert but my understanding is that HPV can be passed on through simple skin to skin contact. If you've not already visited the site, check out the NHS website - www.nhs.uk/.../Introduction.

As Sandy has said, honesty is the best policy, but don't assume who passed it to whom.

    Good luck

  • Hi there - first of all, I'm sorry you're worried, and I hope that you are feeling a bit better. HPV is quite common and can be very treatable. As Sandy has pointed out already, your partner could also have given you HIV, as many men carry the HPV virus without symptoms and pass it on without knowing.

It's probably best to have an open conversation, and trust that your partner will listen and be reasonable. Your health is the most important thing, and good for you for getting a screening and taking steps to feel healthy!

    Sending you hugs xx
