Traveling with cancer

My Mum has just been diagnosed with advanced endometrial cancer. It has been a big shock because she is a very fit and active old lady and has been having only minor symptoms, caused by the cancer having spread to the bowel.

Mum has just turned eighty and we had planned a birthday trip to France to visit my sister and her family. This could just be fitted in before has her big op followed by chemotherapy. I'd really like for us to be able to go while Mum still feels relatively well. The doctor has said this is possible but there is a rsk of her suffering a bowel obstruction.

I'd appreciate any information about that would help us make a decision about travelling. How big a risk if the bowel obstruction? What would be the signs and symptoms? Would action would we need to take and how quickly? Are there other risks to consider? Would flying make a problem more likely? Are there any other questions we should be asking the doctor?

  • Hello hoptimist, and welcome to Cancer Chat.

I'm sorry to read that your mum has recently been diagnosed with endometrial cancer. A trip prior to treatment sounds wonderful, but you're right to check out whether this is possible first. We have some very general information about travelling with cancer on our website, which might be of interest.

It may be that another forum member who has experience of travelling with a family member with a similar condition will be along soon to share their thoughts. In the meantime though, if you'd like to call our helpline, our cancer nurses are on-hand to talk through the questions you mention: 0808 800 4040.

Wishing you and your family all the very best,

    Helen
