Working with cancer

Hello everyone,

My dad has recently been diagnosed with stage 3 rectal cancer and I've been googling relentlessly since then and found this forum, which I think is amazing!

My dad is self-employed - sole trader and is REALLY worrying about paying the mortgage as he has to receive 6 months of ChemoRadiotherapy and then surgery and is concerned the Chemo is going to make him too sick to work.

So my questions are, can anyone share their enlightenment on any benefits he could be entitled to? And has anyone still managed to work a few days a week whilst receiving Chemo?

Thanks so much

Sarah xx

  • Welcome to the forum Sarah.

I'm sorry to hear about your father's diagnosis but it's great you're doing all you can to help him at this difficult time in his life.

I have had a look around our website and have found some information which I thought may be of use to your dad in this situation. If you click here you can find out about government benefits and by clicking here you can read about cancer and mortgages where the information that I think is most relevant to your dad is under the sub heading financial difficulties and help wth repayments. If you do have any questions about this do give our cancer nurses a call. They are available Monday - Friday between 9a,m - 5p.m on 0808 800 4040, which is free to call from a UK landline.

I hope this helps Sarah and all goes well with your dad's treatment and surgery.

    Kind Regards,
