Hello Sandi10 and welcome to Cancer Chat,
I am sorry to hear that your dad has cancer and it is completely understandable that you need some time off work at the moment to be with him. I would suggest maybe you get in touch with your citizens advice bureau who know a lot about employment rights and will be able to advise you on this. You can find out more about them here.
I hope this helps a little.
Best wishes,

Hi
Not sure about the legalities regarding your workplace and it may depend on the conditions of the contract with your agency. Having said that I worked for a large company and was offered unpaid leave for up to six months should I wish to take it. I was not asked to prove my husband's condition but then I was open and frank about my own feelings and actually managed to continue to work part time until the last few days of his illness.
I hope you got some helpful information from the citizen's advice bureau and if you are caring for your Dad then a chat with his GP/cancer nurse may also prove to be useful as regards any benefits he or his carers may be entitled to. Wishing you and your family all the best. Jules54
Probably not, but it sounds a reasonable thing to ask for. It won't be that they don't believe you, they just need evidence to justify to their line managers their decision to give you time off work. I worked for the NHS who insisted I was formally signed off work by my GP when I took time off to recover from chemo. As a manager, I had to ask for supporting evidence when granting compassionate leave to my own staff.
Good luck
Dave
