Travel insurance

Hi

I am new to all this. Partner has been diagnosed with Advanced prostate cancer and wants to go to Guernsey. Anyone any experience of trying to get travel/ health insurance? We must have some as Guernsey no longer has a reciprocal agreement with the U.K. Re health care costs.

  • Hello MissHelen,

Guernsey must be a very nice place - I'd also love to go there one day!

I am sorry to hear your partner has been diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer and you are right to want to sort out  travel insurance before travelling.

We have some detailed information on our website about travel insurance which you can read here.

Travel insurance is a subject that comes up very frequently on our forum so I would also suggest you have a look at past threads on this. You can do a search on our forum by clicking on "search forum" and typing "travel insurance". One example is this thread  where our members discussed travel insurance options.

I am sure some of our members have had to sort travel insurance before and they will be there shortly with some useful travel insurance tips for you.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Helen

As Lucie has said insurance comes up regularly because its so confusing. There are several companies who will cover you for cancer but the premiums can be very expensive. I had an annual policy and when I told them off my diagnosis they would continue to cover me but not for cancer. My husband and I decided to continue with our insurer and take the risk if we had to cancel. It depends on your financial situation and is a slight risk. Strangely enough we have made two claims last year, one when my husband had to go the doctor in Austria and one holiday we had to cancel because my mum was taken into hospital. They paid out with no problem.

We went to Guernsey several years ago for a few days and really enjoyed it.

  • Shop around and check that the policies offered include cover for what you expect.

I recently applied for travel insurance, filled out all the online forms and the premium seemed reasonable. I checked the small print and it covered everything except my cancer - the only reason I'd had to go to a specialist company in the first place.

I did eventually find a policy which covered everything I needed.

Also worth checking single trip vs annual cost - the annual fee was only 50% higher than cover for a ten day break.

    Best wishes
