Chemotherapy and weight management

My 53 year old mum was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer (secondary in the liver) nearly three months ago and we're getting near the end of her first round of chemotherapy. Whilst she has coped exceptionally well with its side effects and remains very high functioning her weight loss has been stark, to say the least, owing to nausea and a lack of appetite. My family are a thin and boney breed in good health so her weight loss is all the more striking and alarming after this fact. Has anyone come across effective ways to manage or ameliorate the inevitable weight loss which accompanies chemotherapy? Are calorie pills a thing or can someone recommend an effective supplement? The ritual of eating meals is a thing of the past now as she becomes overwhelmed by plates of food, so little and often is our current approach.

  • Have you tried home made "power shakes"? I had lots of them while I was on chemo, just blitz full fat milk with any combination of banana, peanut butter, strawberries, chocolate, blueberries etc. Easy to digest and to keep down. Just Google power shake or protein shake recipes.

There are also commercial protein shakes which body builders use. CRUK have some useful advice, it is aimed at people with OC, but can be applied more generally ... www.cancerresearchuk.org/.../eating

    Good luck
