Oxygen with GVHD and hospital transport

Does anyone know if my partner would be made priority for transport home from hospital as he has been put on 24 hour oxygen due to GVHD and the portable tanks only last for 4 hours we wouldn't be able to take two tanks as he is in a wheelchair and I have to carry the oxygen tank on my back whilst pushing the wheelchair. If anyone could help me that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

  • Good evening Neversaynever,

Thought I'd just pop in and respond to your post particularly as I have worked for a number of ambulance services over the years so I can understand some of your concerns!

Do you book your hospital transport through the GP or can you do it directly? If I was in your situation I would contact my GP surgery and ask them to contact the hospital transport booking department and make sure that they are doubly aware of the situation. It may be that your partner is able to use oxygen on board the transport if they are travelling with the appropriate team and hopefully if you are heading to a hospital department there should be some sort of back up if your 4hours get stretched. However I fully understand that you don't want to get to that point!

If you can make sure that the booking centre - and in turn the ambulance control are aware of this that's a great start. I'm sure that the transport team who bring your partner in to the hospital will be able to contact their control room on the day and make them aware of the circumstances so that someone can be sent ASAP once you are ready to return.

I think that the first port of call is contacting the GP and asking them to flag this with the transport department and hopefully everything will go smoothly from there.

    Best wishes,
