Hi, I've just had my reconstruction (almost two years to the day since my original mastectomy for various reasons). It's been about 5 weeks now and I'm still waiting for things to settle etc but thus far I'm not sure its looking like its the right shape. I had a latissimus dorsi op and I shall be very disappointed to have gone through all of this if it ends up no better than it was before (i had a temporary implant put in when I had my mastectomy but the radiotherapy meant it got encapsulated. It went quite hard and uncomfortable and a bit distorted so it had to come out anyyway).
I didn't expect it to look perfect but I thought I would get a result that meant I wouldn't have to always wear scarves and cardis and other extra layers to hid an uneven profile. The worse thing is that there is a huge bulge around the side under my arm. There is to a degree on the good side too where the breast tissue naturally extends but on the side that's been 'done' its so noticeable. It was there after my mastectomy and they even ultrasounded it but there was no fluid or anything, its just the shape that's been created after all this surgery. I was hoping the reconstruction would sort it out but it's still as bad as ever. I have to wear a bra with very deep sides or else it cuts into it and is uncomfortable.
I am due to see the surgeon again at the end of May so will discuss with him then if I still feel its not right, but I just wondered what experiences have others had with their reconstructions? And what is a reasonable expectation.
Thanks
Lou
