Practical question re. money

My mum is fighting a losing battle with this horrible disease and i was discussing practicalities with my brother today and dont know who to ask this question to , maybe someone here can offer an answer.

Supposing you are  person who's partner or parent is going through this and you are the sole earner,  now their condition is deteriorating and you want to take time off work to ensure care is in place and they're ok,  your boss is ok with it but obviously can't pay you,  you can't claim sick pay cos you're not and you can't sign on cos you're not unemployed ! How are you meant to pay the bills and live ? I'm so sorry for asking this but it's just i have nobody else to ask.

  • Hello Bcam

Well my husband and I are in that situation given that I have secondary breast cancer. My husband went to talk with our GP who placed him on reduced hours at work, this has helped greatly. The GP has classed it as stress which is true. Therefore I can have the help from my husband and he still receives full salary.  I have also made sure I have claimed PIP  personal independence alliance. This isn't means tested  and can be assisted by Macmillan nurses who are experts in this area .            Emma

  • I would suggest that you contact your Macmillan nurses, this it what they are there for.  Good luck and best wishes.

  • Hi,

I would suggest you contact the Macmillan Benifits advice service for than can advise and there are even grants they can arrange for certain things. Hope this helps, Brian
