Sore Mouth - any tips?

My Mum has recently been diagnosed with aggressive lymphoma and has had a first dose of chemotherapy this week. She has an incredibly sore mouth with lots of ulcers on her tongue. This is very painful and means that she is also struggling to eat and drink.

She has been given a mouth wash and a mouth coating substance that she swallows neither of which seem to making any difference. Any tips on what might help and what foods / drinks might be soothing or at least less irritating.

Many thanks

  • I only can say that eating ice during chemo helps some people. I haven't tried it yet during chemo but many people have said that it works. I have lymphoma too. I've tried rinsing my mouth with salt water, it helped a little when I had a sore mouth. You will get used to it and many more things that come long the way. I wish you're mum all the best in her journey to fight this. x lentttu

  • When I had chemo I found swilling the mouth with 1tsp bicarb of soda dissolved in a small tumbler of water much more effective than any of the mouth washes. I also found sucking icecubes/ice lollies soothing. If eating is difficult & your Mum starts to lose weight, she will need to add calories to whatever she can eat to keep her strength up. It is so important to do this otherwise the body struggles to overcome all these lovely chemo side effects. So if ice cream is all she can eat on the days her mouth is really sore then just go for it!

    Best of luck!

  • Hello everyone,

I thought I would also point you in the direction of this page on our website which is about treating mouth problems. Don't hesitate also to ring our nurses for advice on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm - it's a free number from UK landlines.

There have also been several threads on the topic of mouth ulcers. Have a look here and also here  for our most recent contributions on the subject.

    I hope this helps!

  • I'm on a trial of a new drug for secondary breast cancer and I had bad stomatitis (mouth and tongue ulcers), from the tablets. I found rinsing with dispersable aspirin worked best. I was also given steroids to dissolve and use as a rinse. I was on the maximum dose and had to have it reduced a bit and I'm fine now. Best wishes.
