Help at home

My 84 year old mum has just been diagnosed with terminal cancer, she is currently at home & has carrers am & PM but I would like to arrange for someone to pop in daily to ensure she eats, breakfast & lunch at least do bits of ironing, talk etc Monday -Friday but I really don't know where I can get help from

  • Hi Lala,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I’m sorry to read about your mum’s diagnosis.

I know others on this forum will be in a similar position to you, and may well be along soon to offer more thoughts but, in the meantime, I wondered if this article on the NHS website might be of help? You’ll be able to find out a bit more about the sort of support that’s available, and who to contact for more information.

Age UK also has lots of good information about home and care on their website and their friendly advice line team (0800 169 2081) could be well worth a call. They’d be happy to talk you through some of the options, and point you to services in your area.

I do hope you get the support your mum needs, and that you find this forum helpful – keep us updated!

    All the best,

  • Hi Lala

Hope the information that Moderator Lucie posted was of some help. When my husband was terminally ill one of the things we were able to arrange was for a 'key safe' to be fitted so that friends/neighbours/carers/doctors could let themselves in as and when necessary (as it could take some time for him to get to the door towards the latter stages). This was arranged through local social services who also have links to other practical needs. Your Mum'sGP/district nurses may also have a 'recommended' list of a local 'befriending' services/private carers and as Lucie has mentioned Age UK do offer various household services.

I hope you are receiving support as a family as such a diagnosis has wide-reaching affects on all those involved. The forum is a great place to chat and share feelings anytime you need a bit of extra support and understanding. Best regards Jules54
