Can you drink alcohol on chemotherapy?

I have had courses of paclotaxel and am now on eribulin.  If I drink small amounts of beer or wine in the evening, I wake up feeling rough.  Last weekend I had a pint and a half of good beer and woke at 5am with a migraine that lasted twelve hours.  Is this experienced by others?

  • Hi amber9

We have some information on chemotherapy and alcohol here.

You will see that it says doctors and nurses giving you treatment will be able to advise you about whether drinking alcohol is safe with the chemotherapy drugs you are taking.

I hope this is useful to you.

  • I too find this and have read in the MacMillan Eribulin information that this chemo contains a small amount of alcohol which could be something to do with it making you feel worse.

I had two glasses of white wine last night and still can't drag myself out of bed yet !

  • When I was having my chemo my nurses said I could. They advised in moderation because something in the chemo can inhance the effect and make you feel sick.

I'm not much of a drinker but I did have the odd tipple without any issues.

    Hope this helps

  • Ask your lead nurse or Oncologist as different chemo will have different guidance.

Mine said I could in moderation but the chemo I was on messed up my taste buds and even fine wine and good whisky tasted revolting! G&T was OK and I once pigged out on vodka and red bull at a gig. My hangovers were amplified though, so I avoided most alcohol while on chemo.

Thankfully my taste buds recovered within a fortnight of me stopping chemo!

    Cheers!
