Men who have had neck dissection, how do you shave?

Good evening,

Had a neck dissection eight months or so ago, neck has recovered well, but I have not yet mastered shaving.

I have found electric razers are more comfortable but can't get under my chin and leave loads behind, I have used metal razers, and although this is much better and leaves a good shave, I have been advised by the hospital not to shave this way. They say my neck is more prone to infection which could cause swelling if I nip the skin. I can't feel anything under my chin so I could cut it open and not feel a thing.

If I could grow a beard I would, but im patcy so it would look a state.:D

  • I'm using a twin blade wet razor with a good gel after a shower Then  lathering my neck in pure aloe vera gel afterwards Some say it's snake oil but It grows in the family garden down in Oz and certainly works for sunburn so why not? Oh I can't feel much on the scar  side of my face either

  • I havent mastered shaving either I had a beard for over 40 years. I dont grow much hair on the side with the dissection as radiotherapy has destroyed the hair follicles and a big area is totally bald. But it still needs shaving and I too was advised not to wet shave with a razor as there is little sensation and it would be esy to cut without noticing. With bad oedema too I was told that the risk of infection to a cut was high. I bought the most expensive electric razor I could afford and it does get into all the folds, but doesnt shave as clean as a razor. I have started to grow a sparse goatee which does away with having to shave under my chin. Dave seems to have found a solution but I am hesitant to give it a go. Kim

  • Hi

I hope you won't mind a woman replying (and  no I am not a bearded lady!).  I was wondering if its worth asking your docs if you can use 'hair removal creams' for sensitive skin (of course, you may already have done so). Just a thought. All the best with  your recovery. Jules54
