I found going back to work the best thing to do, it took my mind off it.

If you feel able to, keep on working, busy days go quickly and leave no time for idle thoughts to get out of perspective. Your job will give you excercise which is good and it will help you feel "normal" as its part of your daily life.  Save your sick pay for your recovery, dont rush back to work, take your time till you feel fully up to it. Even then maybe your employer can arrange for you to start back part time and work up to your full schedule. Wishing you a successful operation and speedy recovery.
