Pelvic floor exercises, post prostatectomy

I had a successful robot-assisted radical prostatectomy on 1st April. No further treatment needed. Did lots of pelvic floor exercises pre-operation, and some again after catheter removal. Two weeks ago I was pain free, urine continent and sexually functional again; but was advised to continue doing pelvic floor exercises for another 3 months.Have been affected by much pain, soreness etc in my groin, thighs and bowel / stomach since then. I stopped the exercises 2 days ago because of this; but now having to use Ibuprofen and Paracetamol again. Is there anyone out there who has had similar experience and can offer advice? Also, similarly, any professional advice in this respect?

  • Hello cousinjack,

I hope you don’t mind, one of the moderators asked me to post.

I don’t have an obvious explanation for why you have started to have pain and soreness again. Following a major operation like this, men may start to become progressively more active as the weeks go on and so this may account for some soreness.

I do think it’s worth getting in contact with your team and letting them know what you are experiencing.  Do you have a urology nurse specialist you could speak to? This may not be related to your surgery at all.  But they may want to check you over, or ask you to make an appointment with your GP so that possible causes, such as infection, could be ruled out.

Infection is usually accompanied with other symptoms such as feeling feverish or having a high temperature. But sometimes people may only have pain and feel generally unwell, this may be the case with a urine infection.

Sorry I can’t provide an answer, but I hope this helps.

    Take care,

    Helen

  • Thanks Helen.

II appreciste your quick reply. I did see my GP 4 days ago and infection was ruled out; but inflammation suspected. I've been on lots of Ibuprofen and Paracetamol since. Then spoke to my surgeon / consultant urologist 2 days ago; who advised to stop pelvic floor exercises for 2-3 weeks and keep taking the painkillers for as long as might prove necessary.Unfortunately, no change realised as yet.
