Travel/health insurance

So, Mum and I are secheduled to visit Paris next month and I am being quoted £2000-3000 for health insurance on a price comparision site! WTF! If I had that money I would be taking her a lot further than Paris! Anyway, I am hoping someone can offer advice on the situation. She is determined to go and seems prepared to go even without insurance. I want to follow her wishes but am nervous about the responsibility it places on me as her carer.

  • Hi moowens,

As you are going to Europe, it is important that she carries a European Health Insurance card (and so should you actually; they're free and very useful). When I travel to Europe with two small children, I must be very unlucky but I inevitably end up having to use theirs! You can find out more about how to apply for this free card here.

However as this may not cover everything, it may still be sensible to have travel insurance as well as the European card even when travelling in the EU. You can find some detailed information on the important question of travel insurance on our site here. Some of our members here may have some great tips for you too.

I hope this helps and that you are able to go to Paris! You will have a great time there I am sure - but then I am biased as that's where I am from :)

    Bon voyage,

    Lucie

  • Hi moowens

The travel comparison sites come up with very expensive quotes.  There was another thread a while ago in which a couple of posters recommended specialis travel insurance companies or you could google cancer travel insurance.  The premium also will depend if your treatment has finished and when.  I have an annual policy which I have had for years as it covers me for Mountain biking but when I was diagnosed with cancer they would continue to cover myself and husband but would not cover me for anything relating to my cancer so I will be having to look around for extra cover.

  • Hi,

There is some useful info and tips in this thread www.cancerresearchuk.org/.../cannot-find-travel-insurance-for-my-mum

Use a specialist site - they are much more reasonable.

    Good luck!
    Dave

  • Thank you all for your replies. I have applied for an EU card and am still comparing insurance on the specialist sites xo
