Financial support

Hi I'm shelly and I had breast cancer,i had radiotherapy last week and hopefully im on the road to recovery,The last 5 months have been the worse not just physically and mentally but financially too.i have tried to get  financial help to support me while I was unable to work,I tried from the moment I was diagnosed with breast cancer to ease the stress when I was recovering, My husband has taking time of work to take me to every appointment to which he was not paid so we were down on his income too ,and he was looking after me after.I worked till the day before my operation so I would have some sort of income for as long as possible before I would have the statuary sick pay you get.Needless to say the statutory sick pay doesn't cover your normal bills and because my husband looked after me,his wages were effected too, causing so much stress, sleepless nights, thank god we had alittle savings because that's what we have been using to pay our mortgage and the other bills that don't stop coming just because you have/had cancer.Im angry because the system hasn't helped me one bit,I would have had help if I was on benefits, I have been told this several times because my husbands in full employment we cannot get any help even though he s taken time off to look after me.I have tried all different avenues so which have failed. So next week I have to return to a very physical job caring for others because I simply can not afford to stay at home and recover physically or mentally, my body is still hurting, and mentally I haven't even begun to process what happened to me and my body and how I move forward from having beeast cancer .I never asked to have cancer and never expected to get it but here we are.Im angry I had cancer,I'm angry that I have to worry like I am and most of all I feel really sad that the one time I  needed support it wasn't there.

Kind regards shelly

  • ShellyT I realy feel for you and your family , you have done everything right worked hard put money away for a rainy day. Used that money to keep your mortgage and bills paid and when you need help theres nothing for you.  If you and your husband had never worked in your lives or just spent everything as you went you would be eligible for help for everything. Maybe have a call to the nurses here who could pass you on to someone who can give you financial advice. McMillan offered me a one off grant not means tested which I declined as they do so much good work with those with cancer. Through 11 years of cancer Ive continued to work and earn my keep I retired 4 years ago and still do some work whilst receiving palliative care, yet there are millions of healthy people who refuse to work claiming benefits in excess of what they would earn in a full time job. Something is seriously wrong with the system.

  • Hi Ed thank you for replying ,I did try mcmillan and they told me I was unable to have help with anything, universal credit, pip,,poll tax,the only thing they said I could try was getting a loan to which I would have to pay back ,I refuse  to even go down that root.a  I couldn't even get a grant because I'm not in there attachment area.i phoned citizen advice no joy.your right the system is wrong and it's sole destroying to think you do everything the right way and when you need the help it's not there.i didn't want to be unwell and I didn't ask for it,but I sure am paying the price.i love working and I most definitely wanted to go back to my job but when I was better, well and strong not when I'm still struggling.you seem a strong person and admire your strength.I have never claimed or asked for help,I actually found it really hard to pick up the phone and ask for help I'm a proud person and I pride myself in the fact I and my husband have worked hard and instilled the same values into my 4 children it's a real shame working class people, not rich not poor just normal hard work people can not get the support and help when needed .I wish you the very best kind regards shelly
