Returning to work in an office - feeling guilty about not being there as I'm the Personnel Director

I had surgery to remove endometrial cancer at end of 2025, and then radiotherapy treatment at end of Feb/beg March.

i started doing a few hours work each day at end of Jan, and now do a full day - whilst working from home (with a couple of hours break at lunchtime when I feel tired).  I feel very guilty about not being in the office with everyone and I know that I am missing out on some important discussions.  However, I can still get very emotional when cancer is mentioned, and just want to avoid people asking me how I am doing.  I am the Personnel Director, so also feel that my place should be in the office.

  • Hi Dutch2,

I can understand your conflicting feelings about this.

It sounds like you've been through a lot, and no doubt this must still be very tough, especially taking into account things like the fatigue. It's important to keep being kind to yourself and to not overstretch yourself - I'm sure people at work will understand this too.

In time and when ready you can begin to take on a little more, including a gradual return to the office if and when you feel able to do so. It is also worth speaking to your doctor about this, if you haven't already, to get their guidance and advice.

I'm sure these feelings you describe are something that others on here can relate to. Hopefully more people will see your post and you'll get some more replies.
