Travel Insurance - I have terminal lung cancer that's stable but I'm struggling to get insurance despite my consultant confirming I'm fit for travel.

On my bucket list I want to go on a Cunard cruise. I have terminal lung cancer which is kept in a stable condition with immunotherapy treatment. but am constantly finding it difficult to arrange insurance despite my consultant confirming I am fit to go on my chosen cruise. Can anyone tell me of any travel company who specialises in cancer travel insurance?

  • It's a nightmare.  Even contacting members on the list e.g insurance with, which was set up to provide insurance for cancer patients either won't cover or there's an enormous premium. Has anyone experience of going without cover just relying on ehic or going with eg premium account with Nationwide who will cover you but exclude  declared conditions?

  • Last three trips abroad to Europe Ive just relied on GHIC card in case of acute emergency. Plus a credit card with plenty headroom. My quotes have been IRO £1500. Obviously do not travel if you currently feel unwell.

  • Hi Farmer_Ed. We were thinking the same. However,  we've just joined the Austrian mountaineering society. Which seems to provide annual insurance cover for £50 no questions about previous health conditions.  Maybe too good to be true? I've used them before for high altitude trekking in the Himalayas but never had to claim. Post office asks the usual questions then turned is down.

  • Hi Paul

Did you try running your details through the comparison website

I am usually able to get one or two quotes. Then laugh and take my own risk. I am on immunotherapy and cancer is incurable. If you are doing serious trekking then you must be fairly fit. If you had to cancel your trip and pay for another flight home it would be way cheaper than the policy. You can always insure your belongings as a stand alone policy.
