Flying during Chemo

Has anyone flown 10 days after first Chemo session for breast cancer . Holiday with family was booked before diagnosis & lumpectomy. I’d really like to go , but would it be safe . I’d be back a week before the next session. Flight is 4 hours . Thank you

  • Hi Aprilshowers65,

I can completely understand your difficult dilemma: on the one hand you really want to stick with your family travel plans especially as this was all booked before your diagnosis and you might also be looking forward to a break after everything you've been through but on the other hand, you are right to ask yourself the question as to whether it would be safe even if you are back a week before the next session. I think the only people who will be able to accurately answer your question are your medical team so get in touch with your chemotherapy nurse or with your consultant/the team who are looking after you for your breast cancer and explain the situation, that you do not want to take risks and whether it is safe for you to travel. Other important factors to take into consideration are travel insurance as you will want to make sure you are covered if you needed treatment abroad.

There is a great section on our website on travel and cancer which I hope you will find useful and I hope that you will also hear from other members of our community who have been in a similar situation and have had to make the same difficult choices. Our nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 - you can call them Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm if you wanted any advice on this.

Whatever you decide to do, I hope that you can soon treat yourself to a nice break and holiday when it is totally safe for you to do so and your medical team should be able to tell you exactly when this might be.

    Best wishes,
