First appointment with Oncology

Hi all,

I am looking for some advice. My husband was recently diagnosed with Glioblastoma and had the tumour removed but now needs Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy. We have an appointment to see the Oncology team at our local hospital and we have been told that they will go through treatment, benefits and also claiming life insurance and his pension but I am a little sceptical as this information was from a different hospital and I have had many dealings with my local hospital and they have never been very accommodating. We would love to release some funds to be able to carry out the things that he loves but as the prognosis that we have been given is 12-14 months, this doesn't qualify us for our terminal life cover, which is less than 12 months. I just wondered if anyone else has faced this and if so, what the outcome was?

  • Hi Susieq15,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to hear that the local hospital haven't been accommodating. Hopefully they will be able to help with the issues that the other hospital have mentioned.

If you haven't already, it would be good to make a list of the questions you have and to try to get as much answered in the appointment as possible.

Following that, if you still have questions or concerns, there may be other places you can get information. For example the Macmillan support line can help with queries about benefits and similar.

Our nurses are also available if ever you'd like to talk things through with someone. You can reach them on freephone 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

And of course if others have similar experience or advice to offer then hopefully you'll get some more replies from others on the forum soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
